Port plans upgrade of radio system
OrlandoSentinelPort Canaveral said Friday that it will use a $2.8 million grant from the
Department of Homeland Security to improve its radio communications system and
build the first phase of an Emergency Operations Center. The port will match
the grant with an additional $700,000, chief executive Stan Payne said. A new
radio system is essential, he said, as the port continues to grow its cruise
and cargo businesses. The emergency center is planned for the north side of
the port, where those businesses, including a planned fuel farm, are
expanding. During the last five years, Port Canaveral has received a total of
$6.5 million in homeland security grants.
